Preview: After Gary Sheridan of
www.carpdreamfishing.com
heard of the plight of me and my 14-year-old
son getting ripped off for a fishing holiday in Spain he stepped in
and gave us a completely free no strings attached
week’s fishing and accommodation in Spain – and asked for
nothing in return!
Date: 13th to 20th
October 2007
Venue: Caspe on the River Ebro.
Day 1, Saturday – Arrival.
We arrived at Rues Airport just after 9am on
the Saturday morning to be met by Pat who was driving us to Caspe.
The journey, of just under 2 hours, flew past and the scenery was
attractive. Pat was very helpful and informative and one of those
people you get on with effortlessly – a sound bloke. Pat settled us
in the apartment that is near to all the amenities – bars,
restaurants, shops, small tackle shop etc. and then gave us a quick
tour of the town so we got our bearings. We went back and unpacked
and Gary Sheridan, owner and guide of carpdreamfishing.com came to
greet us and take us to the supermarket to get our supplies. After
getting to know Gary a bit and unpacking we headed into town for a
few beers around the bars. Back for a shower and then we opted for
the Chinese Restaurant (very good food and very cheep!).
Day 2, Sunday – Fishing Starts.
Fish (all in lbs) 112, 25, 150, 138, 115,
60, 160, 140, 95, 100, 77, 85, 105, 110, 130.
Gary 20 minutes and we
were at our swim for the day in a very popular area. Gary showed us
how to set the gear up (we were probably more of a hindrance than
help – being the first day) which consisted of 6 rods between the 3
of us (I won’t bore you with the details). We decided to take it in
turns on the rods as this seemed fairest. Time for a quick drink
and a fag and then it started: My 14-year-old son Brad was on first
and soon into a Cat of 112lb, the power of these fish is second to
none and they fight extremely well – after 10 minutes Brad had his
personal best (PB) and first ton fish ever on the bank – the look
on his face said it all… I was on next and after seeing Brad
struggle with the power and weight of his fish soon found out why –
having done no physical work for years and being an unfit slob I
wished I’d gone to the gym before we went – I banked a Cat of 60lb (PB).
Then it was down to Colin (who we shared the apartment with) and he
banked a 77lb cat (PB) - The first day saw us catch 5 cats each
(Brad landed a 150lb’er – another PB) Cats and the biggest was 160lb
(over 7ft long) and this pleasure fell to me (PB) – what a battle
and I was completely knackered but I got him out. In some ways we
were glad to call it a day as we were all physically tired out and
you can have too much of a good thing – with every muscle (even ones
I did not have before) aching I was glad to get back and soak in the
shower. After mustering what strength we had left we made our way
out and ate at an Italian Restaurant – a bit more expensive than the
Chinese but still cheap and a very good meal followed by much needed
sleep!
Day 3, 4, 5 & 6 – More Glorious Fishing
Fish (all in lbs) 101, 70, 50, 114, 40, 40,
131, 96, 48, 138, 15, 90, 70, 85, 100, 80, 85, 20, 55, 93, 80, 137,
25, 40, 25, 45, 50, 104, 35, 96, 96, 83, 35, 50, 140, 80, 15, 85,
70, 65, 60, 53, 35, 162, 131, 134, 90, 143, 40, 120, 90, 130, 148.
We changed swims to fish a relatively un-fished
area (the cow island swim) a bit further away (if you know Caspe it
is up round the corner of the river past the sunken trees and to the
left of the island – fish to the right of the island). Talk about
tranquillity – we did not see another person during the four days we
fished this swim. In a nutshell we caught 53 cats between the 3 of
us. The fish ranged from a few young (I’m not calling a 15lb fish
small!) ones to a 162lb’er – again I was lucky that this fish fell
to me (PB), had to keep it clear of snags on the far bank so brut
force had to be used – boy don’t those rods bend, once in open water
I managed to get my breath back and could play the monster using the
clutch that resulted in several reel-screaming runs, when I had the
cat about 15 yards from the bank and thinking he was coming in he
decided to have one last run that was nearly to the far bank – my
arms and hands were killing me and I had to pump him all the way
back again – this time to Gary’s safe hands at the bank – I was
literally shaking when I fully saw the fish – bloody fantastic
creature over 7˝ foot long! We lost a couple of monsters and loads
of others owing to our inexperience and not listening
to Gary the Guide! After a couple of days my body seemed to adapt
to the physical work involved and the fishing became easier – we’ve
all got arms like Popeye now!
For the rest of the week we ate at a Spanish
restaurant near our apartment with other English anglers we had
bumped into – good company – good food – a good laugh!! - Thanks
lads!
Total Catch between the 3 of us for the 5
days catfishing was: 68 cats weighing 5815lb. Biggest cat 162lb.
25 100lb+ cats.
Summery:
What can you say? The best ever fishing
holiday you could wish for. If you are planning a fishing holiday
then give this a go as you won’t regret it or I’ll eat my catfish
slime covered hat. the fishing
holiday and I can unreservedly recommend Gary Sheridan of carpdreamfishing.com for his skills, personality, and ability and
commitment to help you catch the fish of a lifetime!!! See you
next year Gary!!!
Gary Sheridan, if he does not
know it about fishing it is probably not worth knowing. He
will advise as much or as little as you require and give you all the
help needed without being overbearing.
Gary speaks fluent Spanish and has
lived in Spain for 15 years, he is married with two young children.
He has an extensive knowledge of the area and more importantly the
Fish and as with all top anglers an uncanny knack of finding the
fish and the equally important task of helping you to catch them. He
does not just specialise in cats but Carp & Zander etc –
Caspe: A small rural Spanish town. The
people are very friendly but do not speak English but you can get by
without any problems. Everything you require can be found in
Caspe. Restaurants, Bars and Supermarkets are very cheap. The
quality of food is very good and we ate out every night for next to
nothing. Remember, this is not Costa del whatever, this is real
Spain and it is good to meet real Spanish people and see how they
live.
Apartment: The large apartment was
first rate lounge, bathroom, kitchen,
balconies and contained everything needed including the all
important washing machine. If it was a hotel the facilities would
probably be 3/4 star.
Fishing Tactics (simplified):
Large weight and a string of pellets fished
well out (delivered by boat). Hit the bites – Try not to get
dragged down the bank or into the water. Get your Cat to the bank see a landing net that would accommodate a 7˝
foot 160lb cat). All Cats were returned alive. Sounds easy really
– but believe me we would have caught nothing without Gary
Sheridan’s wealth of experience and ability and there is nothing
easy about pumping in 100lb monster cats that know every snag in the
river and can reach high speeds and even wrap their tails around
rocks and hold on.
want to read more fantastic
story,s read on actions speak louder than words.
kevin and
father kevin The *catfish* kelsey
Well, where
do I start!
After much
anticipation and excitement, both my father and I arrived on a sunny
Sunday morning at Reus airport. On arriving at the airport we were
greeted by Pat, an expat and a great bloke who provided us with lots
of knowledge on the surrounding area on our drive to Gary's new
house in Caspe.
The First
day of our trip was spend looking around the local area and the
stunning River Ebro trying to find likely spots to catch the
monsters that we were searching for. After looking round the very
beautiful and picturesque part of the river we were going to be
fishing both my father and I were very eager and could not wait to
catch our first catfish from the Ebro.
Later that
evening we pre-baited a swim before hitting the sack ready to be up
bright and early.
Neither my
father or I had caught catfish before, but had heard from a number
of friends and colleagues what to expect from them. However nothing
could have prepared us for the week we were about to have! NOTHING!
Morning one
started with the wind blowing a gale but we still managed to get out
to fish over our swim we had pre-baited the night before. Half an
hour after the rods went it the alarms were screaming and I was in
to what I thought was a monster, these fish fight like no other fish
I have EVER hooked into! When we got it on to the bank it was a
45lb catfish, the first of the trip which although it was not the
biggest fish it was one of the greediest! With a mouth full of about
15 pellets, this fish had put up a good scrap and had me wondering
of what it must be like to hook a 100lb + fish!
We had one more fish of about 25lb before the wind got the better of
us.
So we
decided to go and get our shopping in and come back in the
afternoon.
We chose a
swim well covered when we came back in the afternoon. And what an
afternoon it was! Our first day resulted in 5 fish with the biggest
being a 106lb belter from my Dad.
As the wind
stayed quite blowy for most of the week we decided to stick to the
swim we had fished in the afternoon for the rest of the week and
this paid off in a big way!
Over the
next 5 days we caught a total of 35 fish with a combined weight of
over 3000lb, YES, 3000lb of catfish. With 9 fish over 100lb!! (5 of
which were caught by my Dad....grrr) With the biggest weighing in at
148lb was caught by myself. Most of the fish we caught were well
over 70lb with a majority in the 90's with a 100lb + fish landed
everyday!!!
This was
one of the best trips we could have imagined, the weather in Caspe
is hot, the River Ebro is beautiful, the catfish fight harder than
anything I have hooked and more than anything Gary worked as hard as
any of those catfish fought to ensure that we were happy and
catching as many fish as was humanly possible in one week.
I cannot
say THANK YOU enough to Gary and his family for making this the trip
of a life time and something I will never forget! (until next year
when we return!!)
I would
recommend Gary to anyone, he is a great guy who is willing to go out
of his way to ensure that you have a great trip that you will not
forget in a hurry!
Neil Turtons testimonial (even I am in envy of what Neil has done
Gary Sheridan) having fished virtually all over the world over the last twenty years,
both freshwater and salt for some of the most demanding fish the world
has to offer both guided and unguided, and believe me some of the guided
trips have been a total waste of time, how they can take your hard
earned cash and sleep easy is beyond me. well how pleasantly
surprised I was after my first visit to Gary Sheridan's ,nowadays I am a
bit skeptical about booking but the initial skeptic in me
was soon brushed aside, yes I caught fish ,also some good ones it was
everything I hoped it would be, when I originally looked at the Ebro I
looked at various outfits listened to friends that had fished there, its
a mine field especially if its your first time, but I liked the sound of
carp dream fishing so stuck with it also it was to be a family holiday
so the days were reserved for family activity the excellent beaches are
a ten minute drive away also the universal Mediterranean theme park is
only forty minutes away family sorted that leaves the nights for fishing
you will catch carp and you will catch catfish they are there to the
same mega proportions as the upper Ebro it is a little harder than other
stretches ,plus side the lower Ebro has lush tree lined banks plenty of
snags extensive weed beds crystal clear water loads of wild life and you
wont meet many other anglers, if you want to fish 24/7 you can, if you
want to do it with your mates you can, if a group of you split the cost
I don't think you will find anywhere on the ebro as cheap,
if like me
you have a family and want to do a bit of fishing as well as family
things you can and still catch some huge fish with limited time on the
bank. and in case that's not enough to wet your appetite Gary and his
wife Loring are two of the nicest people you could hope to meet who will
do there utmost to make your stay an enjoyable one, I have know
hesitation in recommending carp dream fishing to anyone whatever your
level of experience novice or expert alike I even have a group of
American friends that are threatening to come over to fish with Gary to
try and catch a monster European catfish knowing them and Gary I'm sure
that there will be more than one monster caught on that trip. NEIL TURTON MANCHESTER some of neils pictures from around the world click the images to make them

AND SUE McARTHY TESTIMONIAL
Having holidayed around most of Europe for the
last few years doing the sun, drink and nightlife scene sue and I decided to combine another of our
obsessions, fishing. I still wanted to have the pleasure of new
surroundings and people, but wanted to combine this with a different
style of. Experience. We had seen on the internet, holidays advertised,
so decided to contact a number of them for information on availability,
price and what sort of amenities, equipment etc. they provided. On each
email I stipulated that because of the Xmas period I would understand if
the level of attention and guidance was a little less. Of the five I
contacted only one replied the same day, www.carpdreamfishing.com. Of
the others, two didn’t reply at all, I replied to the owner, whom I
later came to know as Gary Sheridan, to ask questions on a multitude of
fish related questions, Gary replied same day every time. On agreeing
the holiday,
when settled us in to our apartment, and then took us shopping!
When we came back he then looked through our end tackle and without
making me feel in the least self conscious gave me a few tips which when
shown and explained, were as most during the coming fortnight Gary continued to
give my wife and I good tips are simple but very effective. During the
next fortnight he continued to improve not only our fishing skills but
also our knowledge and understanding of what's going on underneath the
water. One of the selling points, which appealed to me, was Gary
provided all the tackle required except for end tackle for the carp. To
be fair by the end of the two weeks he was even chipping in with that.
All the cat gear was supplied and was, as stated top notch. My wife and
I had already described ourselves to Gary as enthusiastic amateurs but
as the days progressed, with the help, patience and never say die
attitude of our Gary we caught on the 29th. Deck. In excess of two
hundred and fifty pounds of common carp, crucian carp, barbell, and mullet. In all we exceeded
one thousand pounds in weight! This totally dispelled my initial
skepticism at the name www.carpdreamfishing.com. It does exactly what it
says on the tin. As if the fishing wasn’t enough, the surroundings of
orange and lemon groves eagles, Eagrets, parakeets and so many other
forms of wildlife just made it for us a great holiday. Gary and his wife
even feasted us Christmas day. I am fifty years old and have traveled all over the world, met
allsorts and seen it all. I have, however, seldom enjoyed myself, or
someone else’s company as I did this Christmas. If the guy had tits I’d
marry him!! I have wrote this without any form of inducement other than the fact the good
service is so rare these days it deserves recognition.click these images

John and sue,s return trip
2006 and what they had to say this time.
A MUST READ FOR ALL HAVING
ALREADY SPENT A FANTASTIC WEEK WITH GARY AND LORING AT XMAS, THREE
YEARS PREVIOUS, WHEN INCIDENTALLY WE CAUGHT OVER 1000LBS OF CARP, WE
KNEW WE WOULD BE IN GOOD HANDS. A WARM WELCOME FROM LORING AND GARY WAS
FURTHER ENHANCED BY THE LOVELY EDITION TO THE FAMILY OF GLORIA, A 19MTHS
OLD LITTLE BUNDLE OF JOY. A QUICK CUP OF TEA TO REVIVE SUE, MY WIFE, AND
WE WERE OFF TO THE SHOPS with gary VERY HANDY WHEN YOU DON'T
SPEAK THE LINGO TOO WELL. THE ACCOMMODATION HAD BEEN UPGRADED TO AN EVEN
HIGHER STANDARD AND WE SETTLED IN EASILY. THE FIRST AFTERNOON WE SPENT
BY THE RIVER ON GARY'S JETTY. WHAT A SETTING,
SURROUNDED BY ORANGE, LEMON AND LIME TREES WITH PARAKEETS, HERONS AND
OTHER BIRDS I'VE NEVER SEEN WE ,FISHED FOR CARP ON FLOAT AND SWIM
FEEDER. GARY HAD PRE-BAITED FOR US, AND WITH HIM POINTING OUT THE
HOTSPOTS WE WERE SOON INTO FISH. THE RIGHT SIZED ONES WERE KEPT FOR BAIT
AND THE REST PUT BACK. A GREAT NIGHTS SLEEP IN THE HOUSE WHERE THE TWO
FOOT THICK WALLS KEEP OUT ANY SOUND HAD SUE AND I RARING TO GO. IN THE
MORNING WE AGAIN CAUGHT CARP AND MULLET, AND YES LOST A FEW SCREAMERS.
THE AFTERNOON ARRIVED WITH MUCH ANTICIPATION AND WE BOARDED THE BOAT
WITH A FEW WORDS OF ADVICE AND ENCOURAGEMENT TO SETTLE US DOWN. A STEADY
TRIP UP RIVER WITH FISH JUMPING AND BIRDS OF ALL DESCRIPTIONS FLYING ALL
ROUND US SOON GOT US TO ONE OF GARY'S MARKS. A NICE TOUCH WAS BEING
INCLUDED IN THE SETTING UP OF THE RODS AND PUTTING THEM OUT WITH GARY,
WHEN I'M SURE HE COULD HAVE DONE IT TWICE AS QUICK HIMSELF ALL ADDED TO
THE EXCITEMENT. WITHIN THE HOUR THE FIRST FLOAT WAS DANCING ALL OVER AND
WE WERE AWAY. SUE TOOK THE ROD AND WAS INTO A VERY ANGRY CAT FISH, WITH
ENCOURAGEMENT FROM OUR GUIDE SUE HAD A NICE
FIFTY EIGHT 58lbs ON BOARD AFTER AN AMAZING SCRAP. FIRST FISH FROM
THE BOAT A NEW PERSONAL BEST! OUT WENT GARY TO RESET THE BAIT, AND
WOULDN'T YOU KNOW IT, OFF GOES THE OTHER ONE. THE SIGHT OF HIM PADDLING
LIKE CRAZY WHILE I'M INTO ANOTHER CAT WAS HYSTERICAL. WE LANDED THIS ONE
AFTER A SMALL STRUGGLE AND PUT IT STRAIGHT BACK AS IT WAS A BIT
STRESSED. IT WAS GREAT TO SEE IT SWIM OFF AFTER A BIT OF TLC FROM GARY.
AN HOUR AFTER SETTLING DOWN THE FLOAT STARTS THAT TANGO DANCE THAT MEANS
SOMETHING'S AFTER THE BAIT. AWAY GOES THE FLOAT AND I'M IN AGAIN. WHAT A
SCRAP! THEY DON'T HALF HANG ON AS A CERTAIN CHAP OFTEN QUOTES NEW
PERSONAL BEST
FOR ME AT 54LBS.TWO
MORE HEART STOPPING RUNS LATER , WHICH UNFORTUNATELY WE DIDN'T CONNECT
WITH WE HEADED BACK TO THE HOUSE WITH A BIG STUPID GRIN ON EACH OF
OUR FACES, INCLUDING GARY.
SATURDAY WAS SPENT CHILLING OUT ON THE BANK WITH THE CARP AND SOME NICE
ROACH KEEPING US AS BUSY AS WE WANTED. THE GLORIOUS SUNSHINE GETTING US
STARTED ON A GREAT TAN. THE FISH WE CAUGHT TOPPED UP THE BAIT FOR OUR
NEXT TRIP ON THE SUNDAY. DESPITE RAFTS OF WEED MAKING THE CONDITIONS
LESS THAN IDEAL GARY TOOK US OUT TO A MARK A MILE OR SO UP STREAM. EVEN
THE TRIP UP RIVER IS FILLED WITH THINGS TO SEE AND EXPERIENCE. ALTHOUGH
WE HAD A NUMBER OF RUNS THE CATS WERE BEING VERY CAGY AND DESPITE SOME HEART STOPPING
MOMENTS WE BLANKED. SOMEHOW IT SEEMED TO BOTHER ME LESS THAN USUAL. ON
TUESDAY WE WERE OUT AGAIN ON THE MARK GARY HAD BEEN TRYING TO GET US ON
ALL WEEK ,BUT DUE TO THE WEED HAD BEEN UNABLE TO. THE FIRST TWO HOURS
PASSED UNEVENTFULLY. A WORD OF WARNING HERE, DON,T PLAY THE A TO Z
GAME WITH GARY. A SHOUT FROM GARY ALERTED US TO THE FLOAT DIVING AWAY
AND SUE WAS IN AGAIN. TWO HOURS OF PEACE AND QUITE WITH AMUSING
CONVERSATIONS INTERRUPTED BY ALL HELL BREAKING LOOSE. THE CLUTCH SCREAMING, GARY TRYING TO GET THE BUTT PAD
AROUND SUE WHEN THE LAST OCCUPANT WAS OBVIOUSLY A PIE TASTER FOR A
LIVING. THE MONSTER NEARLY HAD HER IN TWICE, BUT FAIR PLAY TO MY MISSUS
SHE BATTLED IT EVERY INCH OF THE WAY. SHE EVEN HAD TIME TO GIVE US SOME
ADVICE ON WHAT WE COULD DO WITH OUR SUGGESTIONS TO KEEP IT, HEAD UP, OR
KEEP IT AWAY FROM THE OTHER LINES. WHEN SHE FIRST GOT IT TO THE BOAT AND
IT ROLLED IN FRONT OF HER I NEARLY DROPPED THE CAMERA. THE PHRASE, WERE
GOING TO NEED A BIGGER BOAT) CAME TO MIND. AFTER A MIGHTY HEAVE AND A
DOUBLE HERNIA FOR GARY IT CAME INTO THE BOAT, AND KEPT COMING AND
COMING. ALL 8FT. SIX INCHES OF IT.140 LBS STREAMLINED MUSCLE AND A NEW
LOWER EBRO LADIES RECORD. WE WERE STILL BUZZING FROM THIS AMAZING FISH WHEN THE MIDDLE FLOAT SAILED AWAY. MY TURN AND
DESPITE MY BEST EFFORTS TO LOSE IT, SOME QUICK ADVICE FROM GARY HAD ME
IN CONTROL AND AN 86LB ALBINO
SLID INTO THE BOAT.
UP WENT THE PERSONAL BEST BY 34LBS.AS WELL AS HIM BEING A GREAT GUIDE
GARY IS AN ACCOMPLISHED PHOTOGRAPHER.( DON'T SOME PEOPLE JUST MAKE YOU
SICK) THE PHOTO'S HE TOOK OF OUR HOLIDAY WE'LL TREASURE FOR EVER. THE
LAST DAY. THE FORECAST WAS FOR STORMS BUT OFF WE SET ON THE MOST
EXCITING OF DAYS. SIX RUNS AND NO FISH LATER WE WERE ALL PULLING OUR
HAIR OUT AT THE AMAZING CATS AND THEIR ESCAPOLOGY ANTICS. RUN NUMBER
SEVEN, I HIT INTO IT AND THOUGHT I HAD HOOKED THE BOAT . THE LINE WENT
TIGHT AND STOPPED DEAD. A SNAG! ALL OF A SUDDEN THE SANG TOOK OFF AND
TRIED TO RAM THE BOAT WITH ME TRYING TO KEEP UP WITH IT. A QUICK U TURN
HAD IT HEADING FOR THE BANK AND A SUNKEN TREE, I'VE STILL GOT THE BURN
MARK ON MY THUMB WHERE I TRIED to STOP IT ON THE SPOOL. I JUST MANAGED TO
TURN IT AND AFTER A QUICK ATTEMPT AT SWIMMING TO BARCELONA WITH ME
HANGING ON FOR DEAR LIFE WE BOATED AN 8FT 108LB
BEAUTY. MY PERSONAL DREAM OF A 100LB CATFISH AT MY FEET. WHAT A WAY TO
END A FABULOUS WEEK. I HAVE NOT EVEN MENTIONED THE FIESTA OR THE BULLS
WE WENT TO SEE MAKING THIS THE HOLIDAY OF A LIFETIME. WE JUST MIGHT COME
BACK HERE AGAIN!!
Joe,s second trip well joe
what can we say about this one mate.

well were do i start i thought
id write this testimonial and share my views on some of the best fishing
i have ever had. i went out to visit Gary and his wife loring again this
year for some fishing on the ebro. the hospitality was second to none
and they catered for my every need. the fishing is unbelievable i
smashed my pb the first night bagging 5 20lb + and 3 x 30lb carp what
more could a carp angler ask for in one night. Gary took me up river cat
fishing and within an hour i was in to my first cat they are the hardest
fighting things i have ever come across ,the needle went round to just
over 80lbs i was still shaking for the next hour. if you have never been
to the ebro its an inspiring place and so addictive i would recommend
going out there to anybody and with the company of Gary you will learn
so much and have such a good time ill guarantee you wont want to leave. so thanks again for a excellent time and see you soon.
I dont usualy add comments to
any of my testimonials but
Joe i would like to just add one more thing to this testimonial. and
thats simply your a very good angler who deserves the best mate well
done and what a shame about that 40+ carp at the net. dam fish .
from 1999 to 2006 i fished the
delta ebro. these are past comments i have made now we are located in
caspe
The best locations in the
World for wels catfish, have always been on the delta regions. from the
massive Volga delta. in Russia to camarge delta in France virtually
untouched to this day.
Just like the beautiful location of the Ebro
delta, we have proved the big fish are here by breaking the lower ebro record three times in just eight months. catches of 1500lbs by one
angler.
The wels catfish have been seen on
many occasions taking live ducks
+ seagulls from the surface. after being first
introduced back in 1972-74 they have spawned all through the river
system The fish that are down on the delta are here to stay.
They
have an abundant amount of fish to choose from the most abundant
being carp. and mullet.
To fish for the Wels catfish we supply you
with everything that has been fully tested and never let us down
rods, reels, boats,
fuel licences, bait, guides, The list
is endless. If you want to go out in the boat at anytime or fish
from the bank the choice is yours. we can advise you or just simply
leave it to your guide this might just be the most flexible holiday
company you will come across.
